Fellow Virginian becomes first U.S. CTO

President Barack Obama has appointed a Virginian as the first U.S. chief technology officer: Virginia’s Secretary of Technology Aneesh Chopra.

In his weekly radio address President Obama noted, “In this role, Aneesh will promote technological innovation to help achieve our most urgent priorities – from creating jobs and reducing health care costs to keeping our nation secure.” The White House has a stated priority of expanding the use of technology to boost broadband access across the U.S., and has $7.3 billion in stimulus spending earmarked for broadband build-out.

Chopra’s appointment should do great things for broadband coverage in the U.S. Here in Virginia, he has worked diligently to achieve the goal of providing every business in the Commonwealth with broadband technology.
